La Rueda de Casino is a style of salsa dancing that was created in Cuba many years ago. It is a dance for two or more couples, with one leader who calls out different movements or steps. When there are more than two couples the dance is done in Rueda (circle shape). This kind of dance is excellent for creating a social environment among the dancers and the people watching. At the same time, it is lots of fun!
The footwork and moves resemble Cuban-style Salsa, the “calling” out loud of the moves by a leader resemble American Square Dancing, and the swirling partner-changing around the circle reminds you of a version of Swing. This American influence is thought to have come during Prohibition in the USA, Americans went to Cuba where drinking alcohol was legal and they became infected with the Latin rhythms.
In English, La Rueda translates as "The Wheel", and this is reflected by the circular shape that is created when dancing.
